Episode VII Has It’s Writer. Yay. I Guess.
Over the weekend it was announced who would be undertaking the Star Wars: Episode VII script. It is none other than Academy Award winning writer Michael Arndt. Don’t know who he is? That’s ok. I didn’t either.
Turns out, Mr. Arndt’s prodigious writing talents come in high regard due to his award winning screenplay “Little Miss Sunshine”, and “Toy Story 3″. That’s right, the guy who wrote “Toy Story 3″ will now be writing our Star Wars future.
Now don’t get me wrong. I was actually not hating Disney’s acquisition and I love Toy Story. And I’m sure “Little Miss Sunshine” was wonderful as well. But really? As of right now, those are his ONLY two completed screenplays. An Academy Award your first time out is nothing to blink at either. But still. All the writer’s in the world and it’s this guy?
I get it. He’s Disney’s guy or whatever. That’s cool. But Disney has access to pretty much anyone they wanted to shake a wad of cash at. And they chose this guy? And before I start hearing, “Oh well he’s writing the Hunger Games Sequel and that other thing and blah blah blah.” I don’t care. He hasn’t written them yet, they don’t exist, he’s only got two movies under his belt and he’s continuing one of the biggest franchises of our time.
That being said, scripts usually go through a number of rewrites and treatments beyond the first writer, and sometimes it just doesn’t work out altogether. So this could all change. He apparently already turned in a 50 page treatment to Disney, and though there’s barely any details on it’s contents, it seems that it at least calls for appearances from the original cast. Like many, that’s something I sincerely hope happens, and it’s something that’s not too far fetched, as Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford have already all expressed interest in reprising their roles. Only time will tell.
Well, here’s to hoping it all goes alright. I’d love to be completely wrong for once. If it doesn’t then at least the nay sayers of this deal will have a point to say I told you so. And we all know how much that would please them.
