R.I.P. City Of Heroes

Well. Some absolutely stunning and STUPID news I ran into! City Of Heroes, the best, first, and most amazing Super Hero MMO will be calling it quits. Why? Because “In a realignment of company focus and publishing support, NCsoft has made the decision to close Paragon Studios.” There will be no more purchasing of time or items from the store, and the game will come to a close by the end of the year.

This is sad for several reasons, but mostly because it’s all so sudden. They just released yet another new power set, and have been consistently talking about future plans. I guess it could be argued that their turn to a Free To Play/Pay To Play/ Micro Transaction hybrid model heralded the end. But it seemed like it would work, like they had found the magic combination.

Also sad is the fact that for many, this is the game that got them into MMO’s, and many (like yours truly) started playing it with their parents. Fromm day 1 no less. So it’s deffinitely a swift kick in that regard as well.

Finally I wish I could say something about NCSoft, but I guess I can’t. I mean if you were losing money on an investment, what would you do. But it doesn’t help that they make less than popular or intelligent decisions on a near consistent basis.

So farewell City Of Heroes. You were my favorite MMO of all time. You were one of the best of ll time. You managed to have a premise that worked for over 5 years, and consistently improved upon it to please a diverse and fickle fan base. You will be sorely missed.

You can find the team’s goodbye announcement on their site, at na.cityofheroes.com. It’s depressing to say the least.
